The sitter was the second son of John, 9th Earl of Rothes (d. 1722), a Representative Peer (1708-10 and 1715-22), Vice-Admiral of Scotland, and Captain and Governor of Stirling Castle, and his wife Jean, second daughter of John, 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale.
