The sitter is described in his obituary (The Gentlemans Magazine, April 1828, p.377) as the early friend of [Samuel] Foote - a patron of Zoffany - who superintended the 'pecuniary affairs' of the Haymarket Theatre and was subsequently Treasurer of the King's Theatre.
