Very few works are known by the Irish artist Hugh Primrose Dean, who early in his career may have studied under John Butts (1730-1776). Apart from two pictures which sold through London salerooms in 1922, and Lake Albano, 1778 (see Col. M. H. Grant, A Chronological History of the Old English Landscape Painters, Leigh-on-Sea, 1960, III, no. 189, illustrated), the only other known works by the artist are two engravings, Vallombrosa, near Florence, and the Sepulchre erected to the Memory of the Horatii and Curiatii.
