Four initials cut from ILLUMINATED LARGE-FORMAT MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOKS ON VELLUM. [Italy, ca. 1400].
The 4 initials cut to shape, each approximately 80 x 75 mm. (3 1/8 x 2 7/8 in.), plus margins and extensions; initials R, V, and A in pale blue, red, pink, gray-green, and yellow, initial H in two shades of pink, green, gray, red-orange, and blue, all on blue grounds with white tracery and leafy extensions and infilling, traces of music (square black neumes on red four-line staves) and of text in a large rotunda script. Slight rubbing of colors, scratch across initial H, one margin smudged; tipped to velvet backings (versos not examined).
The difference in palette and in the preparation of the vellum suggests that the H came from a different book than the other three initials. Too little text remains for identification of the feasts.
