The recto and verso of the present drawing are possibly related to a picture by Casolani of Samson and Delilah in a Sienese private collection, A. Bagnoli in L'arte a Siena sotto I Medici 1555-1609, exhib. cat., Siena Palazzo Pubblico, 1990, no. 29, illustrated. The position of the head, the arrangement of the hair and the collar of the shirt of the figure on the recto are very close to the corresponding features of the Philistine cutting the hair of Samson. Casolani presumably used one of his garzone for the pose and at a later stage changed and enhanced some of the features, such as adding a beard to make the figure look older. The heads of women on the verso of the drawing are probably a first idea for two figures from the group of Philistines on the left side of the picture.
