Lot Essay

The position of Christ is close to that of a figure in Michelangelo's Bacchanal of Children at Windsor Castle (A.E. Popham and J. Wilde, The Italian Drawings of the XV and XVI Centuries in the Collection of His Majesty the King at Windsor Castle, London, 1949, no. 431, illustrated), and the fainting Madonna to the same figure in Parmigianino's etching of the Entombment, A.E. Popham, Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino, London, 1971, fig. 29.
The Skippe collection contained an important group of drawings by Campagnola and his school.
