Lot Essay

The attribution to Maganza was first advanced by James Byam Shaw (inscription on the mount) and confirmed by Teresio Pignatti in a letter dated February 1990. The handling of the drawing is close to that of Saint Jerome and the Madonna with Angel Attendants in Christ Church, J. Byam Shaw, Drawings by Old Masters at Christ Church, Oxford, Oxford, 1976, nos. 840-1, pls. 495-6.
