A study for the Last Judgement in the church of Saint Lawrence in the Escorial, as identified by Oreste Ferrari and Walter Vitzthum, Ferrari and Scavizzi, op. cit., 1992, A525, fig. XCVII. A drawing of the same composition, only smaller than the present one, is in the Albertina, Ferrari and Scavizzi, op. cit., 1992, D. 140, Inv. B697.
Giordano worked for King Charles II in Spain from 1692 to 1702. One of his first commissions was for the frescoes left unfinished by Luca Cambiaso in the church of Saint Lawrence in the Escorial. Giordano was paid 200 ducats per month for this commission and began work on the frescoes in 1693. These were, according to Palomino, completed in 22 months.
