Felice Stampfle and Jacob Bean compared the handling of the present drawing to that of a Reclining Man in Meditation in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, J. Bean, op. cit., no. 16, illustrated. The features of the young shepherd are similar to those of an angel in a drawing of the Communion of the Magdalene in the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe del Comune, Genova, L. Muti and D. de Sarno Prignano, Alessandro Magnasco, Faenza, 1994, p. 131, fig. 150.
