James Byam Shaw remarked that this was 'a fine example of Perino's mature style'. A.E. Popham dated the drawing to Perino's Genoese period, circa 1527 to 1537. Michael Jaffé compares the drawing with one in the Kunsthaus, Zürich, executed for the altarpiece of the Chapel of Saint George and Saint John in the Duomo, Pisa.
Bernice Davidson dates the drawing to the early 1530s.
