For the figure of Saint Elizabeth in the Visitation from the cycle on the life of the Virgin commissioned by Anton Fugger, or his nephew Hans Jakob Fugger, for the family chapel in Santa Maria della Pace, Rome., A. Venturi, Storia dell'Arte Italiana, Milan, 1932, IX, fig. 321. The exact date of the commission is unknown, although documents proves that it was some time after April 1549.
Most of the known figures studies for the Fugger chapel are done on blue paper and are very close in handling to the present drawing, J. Hunter, The Drawings and Draughtsmanship of Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta, Master Drawings, 1988, XXVI, pls. 7 and 9-12. Like all these studies the artist concentrates on the draperies leaving the anatomical parts lightly sketched.
