Lot Essay

Probably related to the frescoes now destroyed by Fermo da Caravaggio for the garden façade of the Palazzo del Tè executed in 1532, for which Giulio Romano provided designs. Two other drawings related to this decoration are known, all showing similar subjects, one from the Ellesmere Collection, sold at Sotheby's, 5 December 1972, lot 46, shows two similar barbarians holding hands and two larger modelli at the Louvre depict the same type of figure.
