Lot Essay

This drawing is dated by Giuliano Briganti to the 1720s. Two other views of Ronciglione by van Wittel are in a Roman private collection, and a drawing in the Rijksmuseum Printroom, but both showing the village from the other side of the valley. Briganti, op. cit., nos. 141 and 1d, illustrated.
Ronciglione is situated near the Lago di Vico, north of Rome, not far from Caprarola.
