Lot Essay
This drawing, evidently executed as a work of art in its own right, may be compared with the series of the same subject from Prince Alexis Orloff's collection. As Professor Knox observes, the closest of these is the Orloff sheet that was sold in Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 29-30 April 1920, as lot 85, illustrated, which now in a New York private collection, Tiepolo, A Bicentenary Exhibition, exhib. cat., The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, 1970, no. 14, illustrated. Knox dates that drawing to about 1735. That dating may apply to the present sheet.
