The free handling of the red chalk is close to that of a drawing in the Louvre, J. Guiffrey and P. Marcel, Inventaire général des dessins de l'Ecole Française, I, Adam-Bouchardon, Paris, 1933, no. 724, illustrated.
The present drawing is part of a group of sheets of similar size and technique, a number of which are in the Louvre, Guiffrey and Marcel, op. cit., II, no. 796-808, illustrated.
A reversed version of this drawing, probably a reworked counterproof, was in the Boussac collection, Paris, 10 May 1896, lot 148, and later in the Lasquin collection, Paris, Galerie Petit, 7 June 1928, lot 14, illustrated.
