Another sheet grouping studies of heads in a similar way is The Seven Ages of Life, in the Lauder collection, E. Williams, Drawings by Fragonard in North American Collections, exhib. cat., National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1979, no. 41, illustrated. The format of the present drawing recalls that of a group of chalk drawings in the Louvre, A. Ananoff, op. cit., nos. 147, 148, 150, figs. 62-4.
The smooth and fluent handling of the wash of the Lauder drawing suggets a dating to the 1770s, according to Eunice Williams.
