Lot Essay

Sir Denis Mahon has kindly confirmed the attribution to Guercino, on the basis of a photograph.
Possibly related to three other pictures of the same subject commissioned from Guercino in 1632, two of which are in the church of the Sacred Stigmata, Ferrara and in the church of the Capuchin in Piacenza; the third one is lost, D.M. Stone, Guercino, Florence, 1991, nos. 133, 137, illustrated.
