With rectangular cornice and frieze carved with hunting scenes flanked by cherubim masks, above a pair of panelled cabinet doors carved with scenes depicting Telemanchus and Nero on horseback, flanked by figural terms, the interior fitted with shelves and four short drawers, the base fitted with a pair of frieze drawers flanked by rams heads above two further panelled cabinet doors carved with Vespasian and Caesar and enclosing shelves, flanked by figural terms, the sides similarly carved, above a moulded plinth base, on later ball feet, incorporating 17th century elements

Lot Essay

A closely related cupboard carved with valorous knights, rams' heads at the angles and figural terms is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris and is illustrated in H. Hayward World Furniture, London, 1965, p. 76, fig. 245. These 'armoire à cavaliers' originated in Southern France.
