Lot Essay
Although best known like his teacher Frans Snyders as a painter of dead game pieces, Fyt was also an accomplished painter of flower still lifes. He had begun executing flower garlands around cartouches by 1643 (see M.L. Hairs, Les Peintres Flamands de Fleurs au XVIIe siècle 1985, pp. 372ff) and depicted flowers in vases, sometimes with fruit, by 1650 (for example, a signed and dated work sold at Joseph Fievez, Brussels, April 30, 1947, lot 25). The present painting of roses in a simple glass vase may be compared to a similar painting, again on an intimate scale, formerly in the collection of Rodolphe Kann (his catalogue, 1900, no. 21, canvas 48 x 36.5cm.).
