拍品專文

The unusual composition of the present painting does not correspond with any of the standard views of St. Peter's, although it is painted from the same viewpoint that Claude chose for his drawing now in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (see M. Roethlisberger, Claude Lorraine, the Drawings, 1968, pp. 88-9, no. 42). The view, based on Marlow's own drawing now in the British Museum, is taken from the Via Aurelia Antica, looking towards the Vatican Walls with the Basilica of St. Peter's and, according to an inscription on the reverse of the drawing, the dome of San Carlo al Corso beyond.

We are grateful to Mr. Michael Liversidge, Bristol University, for confirming the attribution.
