According to Bernard Berenson (B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Renaissance: Florentine School, 1963, I, p. 207) 'Tommaso' is the soubriquet given by Bernard Berenson (B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Renaissance: Florentine School, 1963, I, p. 207) given to an artist whose work closely resembles that of Lorenzo di Credi and, at times, Piero di Cosimo. He has also been referred to as 'The Master of the Santo Spirito Sacra Conversazione' after a Madonna and Child with Saints John the Evangelist and Jerome in that church. A further work by this artist depicting Venus and Adonis was sold at Christie's, New York, May 21, 1992, lot 10 ($145,000).

We are grateful to Mr. Everett Fahy for confirming the attribution.
