The present work can be dated to circa 1600. Together with a Venus and Amor in the Failla Collection in Rome (exhibited Rome, Palazzo Venezi, Il Cavalier d'Arpino, 1973, p. 109, no. 31) and a Venus Reclining sold at Sotheby's, London, Oct., 27, 1993, lot 182 (£55,000) it belongs to a group of works depicting mythological subjects whose erotic content may well reflect the influence of the School of Fontainebleau, with which Cesari would have been familiar following his visit to Paris in 1600-1.
