Lot Essay

Seghers, whose style derived from the works of Jan Brueghel I, specialized in small religious images surrounded by swags or garlands of flowers which were intended for private devotional use. He spent all his working life in the seclusion of a Jesuit Order, joining the Society of Jesus in 1614. He received no payment for his paintings, instead his wealthy patrons presented the Monastery with lavish gifts.
