The colorful palette and relatively painterly handling of this picture suggests a mature work by Teniers, circa 1660. It appears to be the artist's only painting of this popular Biblical theme. Whereas most seventeenth century depictions of Bathsheba (including Rubens' painting in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, Inv. no. 965) depicted the theme with monumental figures in the foreground, Teniers here depicts the story with smaller figures in a park-like setting reminiscent of sixteenth century paintings - by, among others, Jan van Scorel, Lucas Gassel, and Jan Massys. Margret Klinge has not seen the painting in the original, but on the basis of a photograph is uncertain of the attribution to Teniers.
