Active in the province of Palencia during the early 16th Century, the artist takes his name from the town of Quintanilla de la Cueza where three of his panels are preserved. He is recognizable by the morphology of his figures whose curly locks and beards, and angular profiles distinguish his compositions. C.R. Post (A History of Spanish Painting, IX, 1947, p. 472) notes 'His gifts lie at a level somewhat above the provincial average, demonstrated even in his careful and pleasant treatment of architectural settings and in the sensitively rendered and almost Giorgionesque vista of town and lake..' which have their genesis in Pedro Berruguete's painting. Further paintings by the Master of Cueza include a Martyrdom of Saint Peter, in the Episcopal Palace, Palencia (Post, op. cit., IX, fig. 172) and The Appearance of Saint Michael to Saint Gregory, in the Parish church at Quintanilla de la Cueza (ibid, IX, fig. 171).
