Lot Essay

The present pair of pictures is by a close follower of François Boucher, whose is recognized as having executed works in the style of Boucher at the beginning of his career. They can be compared stylistically to the Bethuel greeting Abraham's Servant, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg, of 1727, executed by Boucher one year before his departure to Rome and to Noah entering his Arc, a pair, both in private collections in Fort Worth, Texas. This last pair, also featuring a procession of people and animals as in the present pictures, seems to be inspired by the art of Castiglione, whom Boucher would have known from engravings before going to Italy (see A. Laing and P. Rosenberg in the catalogue of the exhibition, François Boucher, 1703-1770, New York, Detroit and Paris, Jan. 17., 1986-Jan. 5, 1987, nos.10-11).
