The attribution to Martinus Nellius was first advanced by H. Gerson as a photograph mount at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, the Hague. As the Wadsworth Atheneum's 1978 catalogue observed, comparable paintings are the signed and dated still life of 1695, formerly with Goudstikker, Amsterdam (cat. 1917, no. 34); the still life dated 1693 in the Hallwyl Collection, Stockholm, no. KA42; and a signed work with a peeled lemon, cherries and berries offered at Dorotheum, Vienna, March 14, 1991, lot 81.
