The trefoil-pierced back corresponds to designs for 'gothick chairs' published in Robert Manwaring's 'The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion' of 1765 (reproduced in E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, 1990, p. 79, pl. 13).
