Each oval padded back and seat upholstered in striped silk moiré within a fluted frame, the outscrolled arms carved with foliage, on turned tapering fluted legs headed by acanthus and with foliate-carved feet (2)

Lot Essay

The frames of these chairs are virtually identical in design to a set purchased in the 1770's by Lyonel, 5th Earl of Dysart for Ham House, Surrey (illustrated in P. Thornton, 'Ham House', F.H.S.J., 1980, fig. 188). The Ham House chairs differ with their pierced open backs.
