In the manner of Giles Grendey, each scalloped crest above a pierced foliate-carved splat, the drop-in seat upholstered in blue silk damask, the seatrail edged with gadrooning, on foliate-carved cabriole legs and hairy paw feet, both chairs bearing the printed paper depository label of J.Wilson & Sons, Exeter, no. 95, one with plastic plaque of Frank Partridge, seat frames replaced (2)

Lot Essay

These chairs reputedly formed part of the furnishings of Culver House, the neo-Tudor home built for the Rev. Richard Stephens in 1835 and remodelled for Edward Byrom in the 1870's. Four from the set were sold by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Sotheby's New York, 9 June 1984, lot 89 (cover lot).
