LIFE-SAVING CHAIR
Alphonso Wilson, New York, NY
painted wood, galvanised tin and brass
11¼in. high A.2
Note: This model which consists of a doll's chair, with some very neatly fabricated sheet metal parts, is rather ingenious. Apparently the inventor knew about the possibility of life jackets and the like being stable in an inverted position. If you strapped yourself or a child in this chair and went overboard, the instant that the flotation tank under the seat, was buoyed up by the water, a telescoping weight centered under the chair would extend to three times its stored position. The weight on the end of it would make this lifesaving device stable in the erect position.
