Lot Essay

Joseph Addison Underwood and John Milton Underwood were the sons of Joseph Underwood and Sylvia Chapin Underwood, both born in New York City.

Joseph Addison Underwood was born July 15, 1809. He was a member of the Wilkes Expedition from August 1838 until his death on July 25, 1840. He was killed by natives on the island of Mololo in the South Pacific.

John Milton Underwood was born August 31, 1812. Later he became one of the early settlers of Chicago, Illinois and was one of the founders of the Field Museum of Natural History. In his later years, he retired to Danvers, Massachusetts where he died February 16, 1888.
