[LOUISIANA]. An Account of Louisiana, Laid Before Congress by Direction of the President of the United States, November 14, 1803: Comprising an account of its boundaries, history, cities, towns, and settlements... Providence: Heaton & Williams n.d. [1804?]. 12mo, 72 pages, A-F6, 162 x 94 mm. (6 7 /16 x 3 3/4 in.), original unlettered quarter sheep and marbled paper boards, worn, front inner hinge reinforced, text lightly browned, small tear to top margin of F1, quarter red morocco gilt slipcase. Howes L-3 (dating the edition 1804 and counting 42 pages). A rare Providence edition of a popular compilation on Louisiana "furnished to the Executive by several individuals" (p. 1) and laid before Congress during its consideration of the ratification of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty. The principal author was probably John Sibley, who corresponded with Jefferson on the region (see previous and following lots). The fact that editions are recorded from Philadelphia, Wilmington and Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1803 attests to the American citizenry's widespread interest in the newly acquired territory.
