Similar to a larger set formerly in the Glen Sanders House in Scotia, New York, attributed to Robert Carter, these chairs were based on a variation of Plate 2 from Hepplewhite's Guide. A popular New York form, these chairs relate to a pair attributed to a New York cabinetmaker, Thomas Burling, once owned by George Washington. For a related example and further discussion, see Patricia E. Kane, 300 Years of American Seated Furniture (Boston, 1976), pp. 164-165, fig. 143.
