According to Lynne Thornton, this work was mistakenly described as being a portrait of an Algerian in the past, but is correctly identified as a woman from Constantinople. In the painting she is shown wearing the "yashmak," or veil, typically worn by upper class Turkish women and which allowed the features of the woman to be clearly seen while not exposing the whole nose.
