DODGSON, Rev. CHARLES LUTWIDGE ("Lewis Carroll"). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. New York: D. Appleton and Co. 1866. Wood-engraved illustrations after John Tenniel. 8vo, original red cloth, gilt-decorated, g.e., cloth finish somewhat waterdamaged, some soiling, foot of spine a little frayed; hinges cracked, upper fore-corners creased (from bump) on preliminaries and first few leaves of text; cloth chemise and slipcase. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, comprising the original rejected sheets from the London 1865 issue with a cancelled title-page (New York: D. Appleton, 1866). Williams, Madan, and Green 44.
The original English copies were withdrawn from the London market due to Tenniel's dissatisfaction with the printing of his illustrations. Carroll agreed and had the entire edition withdrawn. These copies were then sold to D. Appleton & Co. of New York, who issued them as the first American edition in 1866 with the cancelled title.
