FIRST EDITION, First state of jacket, PRESENTATION COPY TO A FAMILY MEMBER, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: "To Elizabeth P. [Pfeiffer] French with all best wishes, Ernest Hemingway." The recipient was Hemingway's second wife Pauline's first cousin and a niece of Uncle Gus Pfeiffer (a great friend to the married couple and a sponsor of Hemingway's first African trip).
