A self-taught painter from Glens Falls, New York, Henry A. Ferguson specialized in landscapes of the upstate New York countryside. Ferguson was an associate of the National Academy of Design in New York and a member of the Century Association. Later in life the artist travelled extensively in Europe and North Africa, completing pictures that depicted the architecture and landscape of those regions.
During the late 1860s and early 1870s Ferguson exhibited several pictures in New York and Buffalo. For example in 1867 Ferguson exhibited at the National Academy of Design a painting titled "Near Lake Sanford -- Adirondack," which may be the present lot.
