Lot Essay
In 1927, Carl Milles designed the marble and bronze 'Diana Fountain' in conjunction with the architect Tengbom for the central court of the new building for the Swedish Match Trust, Stockholm. A marble fountain basin was installed in the center of the yard with a bronze fantasy of Diana rising from the center and with sleeping animals 'resting' on the surface of the water. A marble colonnade at one end of the courtyard was defined by a bronze boar and a doe leaping out from each side. The present bronze is a reduction of this boar. Another example of the model signed only with the artist's initials and without a foundry mark was sold in these Rooms, May 26, 1988, lot 303.
