Lot Essay
The form of this classically draped figure holding aloft candelarms relates to several models executed by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), one of the most celebrated bronzier-ciseleurs of the Empire period. This figure with one outstretched leg relates specifically to a candelabra now in a private collection in Bayreuth and illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, fig. 5.2.2, p. 328. A pair of similar candelabra with gilt figures and lacking wings was sold Sotheby's Monaco, 18 June 1994, lot 130.
