The distinctive inlay and overall design of this commode relates closely to the documented oeuvre of Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), Intarsiatore delle Loro Altezze Reali. The frieze of scrolling acanthus and flowerheads is clearly inspired by a drawing by Maggiolini now in the Civica Raccolta della Stampe, A. Bertarelli, Milan, illustrated in G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Intarsiato di Giuseppe Maggiolini, 1957, plate CIV. A commode attributed to Maggiolini with a frieze of this design was sold Christie's London, 14 December 1995, lot 270. The marquetry of the uprights with classical urns issuing foliage, is a simplified version of several drawings by Maggiolini illustrated in Morazzoni, op.cit., plates CIII-CIV.
