Lot Essay

This room was part of a group of ten panelled rooms which French & Co. acquired from Mr. George Widener in 1957. These rooms were originally part of the residence of Mrs. Hamilton Rice (formerly Mrs. George D. Widener) located on Fifth Avenue and the offered room is listed as the Louis XVI guest room. Mrs. Rice's house, designed by Horace Trumbauer from circa 1922-25, was executed in a restrained Louis XVI manner typical of the taste for recreating french interiors among American collectors during the first quarter of this century. Though the exact origin of this room is not recorded, the Parisian decorator Carlhian acquired several of the rooms for Mrs. Rice from various Parisian hôtels including the small octagonal salon with similar lunettes to the room offered here
from a hôtel on the Places des Victoires. (see B. Pons, French Period Rooms, 1650-1800, 1995, p. 100)

Please note that only a portion of this lot will be available at the Park Avenue Galleries for viewing prior to the sale. Please contact the European Furniture Department directly to inspect all of the panels. A floor plan and wall elevations of the room are available for inspection.
