Lot Essay

The distinctive outline and use of veneers of this bureau-cabinet relate it to a group of case pieces executed in Genoa in the 1760's. The radially veneered central medallion on the sides and fall-front relates to several bureau-cabinets illustrated in L. Caimi, L'Ebanisteria Genovese del Settecento,, 1995, pp. 195-99, figs. 161-167. Another bureau-cabinet of similar design and single cabinet door is illustrated in M. Agnellini, Mobili Italiani del Settecento, 1990, p. 96. A related Genoese bureau-cabinet was sold Christie's Rome, 27 March 1990, lot 224.
