Lot Essay

This exquisite small box is decorated in a style associated with the transition from late Koryo to early Choson. The decoration consists of small-leaf scroll with several kinds of flowers, including lotus and chrysanthemum. The vine scroll is rendered in thin strips of shell rather than the twisted metal wire that was common in earlier Koryo lacquers. The blossoms are decorated with finely incised lines; the pink and green hues of the iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay are especially beautiful.
