Lot Essay
Kim Ki-Chang was born in Seoul and studied painting under Kim Eun-Ho (1892-1979). His work won first prize at the "Cho Sun" art exhibition in the late 1930s. Kim Ki-Chang and his wife, Park Rae-Hyun (b.1920), also a painter, exhibited together at the East-West Cultural Center in Hawaii in 1964 and at the Obelisque Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 1965 and at the Allentown Museum in Pennsylvania in 1971.
In 1970 Kim Ki-Chang had a one-person exhibition at the New York Cultural Center in New York City and in 1971 he won the March 1st Cultural Award in Korea. He participated in the exhibition entitled "France and Korea, Modern Art", sponsored by the French Cultural Center in Seoul in 1971. He taught painting at Soo Do University in Seoul from 1972-74. In 1981 he was awarded the "Mo Ran Jang" and he had a one-person exhibition at the Lotte gallery in Seoul in 1984 and Song Won gallery in Seoul in 1990. His paintings were exhibited at the Korean Cultural Center in New York in 1981 and in Los Angeles in 1985. His work was shown in the "Korean Modern Art exhibition" at the Hoam Museum in Seoul in 1992 and he had a one-person exhibition for his eightieth birthday sponsored by the Seoul Arts Center at the Han Ka Ram Museum in Seoul in 1993.
