AN UNUSUAL LARGE INSCRIBED PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADE WATER VESSEL, PAN
18TH CENTURY

Well carved as a large and shallow lingzhi head of irregular outline, the thick, semi-translucent sides flaring slightly from the shallow conforming foot rim to the flat mouth rim, finely inscribed on one side with two lengthy inscriptions, the stone well polished and of even tone with some opaque buff and pale brown mottling
12 7/8in. (32.6cm.) long

Lot Essay

The inscription is divided into two sections: the first entitled: 'an imperial composition on a Moghul jade dish'; the second entitled: 'an imperial composition on a Moghul jade ladle'. It touches on various topics concerning jade production and the sources of jade, poetically described as the 'high mountains of Tibet'
