A RARE PAIR OF SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURES OF BRAYING BACTRIAN CAMELS
TANG DYNASTY

Depicted standing four-square on a rectangular slab base, with neck arched, head raised, eyes bulging, forelock swept back between the pricked-back ears and mouth parted in a bray, the two humps flopped sideways in different directions and the tail flicked over the right haunch, both camels covered in amber and straw glazes, the pattern of the colors repeated in reverse on the other, one with the forelock, humps, tail and patches on the sides and outer thighs splashed in amber on a straw-glazed ground, the other with these areas in straw glaze reserved on an amber ground, minor restoration
