Lot Essay

Several tiger-shaped pillows have been published, varying primarily in the decoration on its surface, which can be painted with birds and flowers of various types or just floral sprays. Similar examples include one dated to the second year of the Dading reign (Jin Dynasty), corresponding to 1162 A.D., included in the Shanghai Museum Chinese Ceramics Exhibition, Shanghai, Catalogue, p. 20; one in the exhibition, Gems of Chinese Art, Selections of Ceramics and Bronzes from the Tsui Art Foundation, Empress Place Museum, Singapore, 1992, Catalogue, no. 56; and another illustrated in Chinese Ceramic Pillows, The Mr. & Mrs. Yeung Wing Tak Gift, Hong Kong, 1993, no. 118, where the authors mention that these tiger-shaped pillows may have been used to ward off evil
