AN EXPORT LACQUER STYLE OVERSIZED INRO
EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
An unusual three-case inro of very large size carved in high relief on one side with a square portrait medallion of a woman of European appearance wearing a Chinese costume and elaborate Chinese hair ornament below the name, in roman letters, WASiNTON [Washington], and bordered by foliate scroll; on the opposite side is carved another roundel enclosing a character inscription, above the inscription, also in roman letters, NEMO TO (carved by Nemo) , and also bordered by foliate scroll, and the entire surface covered by red lacquer, the cases matching; fitted with an agate bead ojime--6¼in. (15.8cm.) high, chips and surface wear
