Of rectangular shape with rounded corners decorated in gold takamaki-e, kirigane, hirame, togidashi and hiramaki-e with views of Kyoto framed by clouds and identified by small gold labels, most now worn, and with the Eight views of Lake Biwa (Omi hakkei) on the sides, continued views on the underside of the lid, the lower compartment of the writing box decorated in hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with the 'Three Friends', pine, plum and bamboo, on a nashiji ground; fitted with a silver mizuire cast in the form of a crane and an inkstone--7¾ x 9¼ x 1 5/8in. (19.7 x 23.5 x 4.2cm.), edge cracks repaired
